Not twenty-five, not twenty-seven—twenty-six, steady and unchanging, the way the God it names is steady and unchanging.
Why the Number 26 Keeps Showing Up in Scripture
Here’s something that stopped me in my tracks the first time I traced it out with my own finger on the page. Yod is worth ten, Heh is worth five, Vav is worth six, and Heh again is worth five. What I don’t hold loosely is this: every time I trace Yod, Heh, Vav, Heh across the page and land on twenty-six, I’m reminded that the God of the Bible isn’t a vague force or an abstract idea. He has a name. That name has weight, structure, and a number that has quietly followed it for thousands of years.
Some have gone further and pointed out that 26 can be split as 13 plus 13, and that thirteen shows up elsewhere tied to the Hebrew word for love, ahavah, and the word for one, echad—both carrying a value of thirteen in the same system. Put them together and you get a quiet little sermon in arithmetic: One plus Love equals the Name. I can’t prove that was intentional the way I can prove ten plus five plus six plus five equals twenty-six, but I’ll confess it makes me smile every time I think about it.
So the next time you read those four letters, Yod Heh Vav Heh, printed carefully in the Hebrew text, or see them rendered as YHWH in the margins of your Bible, I hope you’ll pause the way I did.
