WHY THIS BOOK

Most kids’ books entertain… or they teach. This one does both.

The Airport at Midnight is an airplane mystery book for kids where the science is how the case gets solved, not a lecture tacked onto the end. By morning, the whole town is sure the lights were a UFO, a ghost plane or a secret government project. Your child learns to do what real scientists do: test every guess, one change at a time, until only the evidence is left standing.

What your child walks away with

Real science, woven right into an airplane mystery book for kids.

✈️

The forces of flight

The four forces of flight, and why bird wings and airplane wings share one shape.

🌫️

Weather and sound

Windsocks, air pressure, dew point, how fog forms, and why the wind can carry sound away.

📡

Radar and migration

How radar works, why birds migrate, and how they find their way by the stars.

🔍

Thinking like a scientist

Drones, heat cameras, light pollution, the OBSERVE rule, and how to run a fair test.

The story

At midnight, from the town clock tower, raccoon detectives Slick and Muffin see red and white lights circling the little airfield. Then the lights hang perfectly still and blink out, without a sound. By morning, dozens of worn-out songbirds are sitting on the hangar roof.

Jonah, who knows everything about airplanes, is sure it was a secret test plane. Wren, who knows everything about birds, is sure it’s all about the birds. With Captain Bea, a retired pilot who reads the weather like a newspaper, they test every guess.

The trail runs from the runway to the weather station, into a dark hangar, through a foggy night stakeout, and finally in front of a radar screen full of birds.

FOR TEACHERS & HOMESCHOOL

A ready-made science unit

This airplane mystery book for kids has a full-color See How It Works diagram and a Field Notebook Challenge in every chapter, plus an answer key in the back. It pairs flight, weather and life science in one story. Three questions to start the discussion:

  1. Why do bird wings and airplane wings share the same shape?
  2. Jonah and Wren were each sure they were right. How did they find out?
  3. What does “change one thing at a time” mean in a fair test?

Parent questions about this airplane mystery book for kids

What age is it for?

This airplane mystery book for kids is for ages 9 to 12, about grades 4 to 6. It also works well as a family read-aloud.

Is it scary? There are UFO rumors.

No. The town’s rumors are just guesses the kids test and set aside. There are no villains and no danger, only careful questions and real evidence.

Does my child need to read Books 1 to 8 first?

No. Each Heritage Hollow book is a complete mystery. If your child liked the codes in Book 7, The Museum’s Secret Alphabet, this one swaps codes for science.

My child loves airplanes but not reading. Is this a good fit?

Yes. Jonah is the airplane expert in the story, and the hands-on Try It activities give active kids something to do between chapters.

Paperback or Kindle?

Both are on Amazon. The paperback is 131 full-color pages in a large 8.5 by 8.5 inch format, which makes the diagrams easy to see. The Kindle edition is included with Kindle Unlimited.

Choice1-3d

About Brad (Founder, Chaos Coordinator, CEO-ish) Hi, I’m Brad—the guy behind Choice1-3D who thought, “What if cartoons, music, and life lessons all argued in the same room?” I create Pixar-style 3D animation, comedy shorts, and original music that poke fun at real life, make you laugh, and occasionally sneak in something meaningful before the raccoons knock it over. While Henry edits everything to perfection, Gina ignores the budget, and the raccoons eat literally everything, I keep the lights on, the ideas flowing, and the stories coming. My desk is mostly notes, coffee, and bills—but somehow it all turns into fun. Choice1-3D exists because life is loud, weird, and funny… and sometimes the best way to understand it is through a cartoon raccoon and a good laugh. Welcome to the madness. 😄
