George Valentino

Bladder alarm mornings are the reason I know the ceiling of my bedroom better than my own driveway. I have made peace with being conscious at hours that used to only exist for burglars and milkmen. Turns out my internal plumbing works better than anything battery-operated ever did.

😂 GEORGE VALENTINO · MON / WED / FRI

The Bladder Alarm

George’s bladder has become a more reliable alarm clock than anything he’s ever owned, going off every morning at 5 a.m. sharp while Gina sleeps straight through a freight train.

Folks, let me tell you about my bladder alarm. It does not run on batteries, does not need winding, and absolutely despises the snooze button. Every morning at five a.m., right in the middle of a beautiful dream about pancakes taller than my retirement account, it goes off without permission or apology, like a tiny landlord pounding on the door of my dreams demanding rent I never agreed to pay.

Why My Bladder Alarm Runs Better Than the Swiss

I have owned four alarm clocks in my life and lost every one of them to either a broken snooze button or a wife who threw it across the room. This internal mechanism has never missed a single shift, not once, not even on vacation, not even that time we lost power for six hours and every other clock in the house just gave up and stared at us blankly. It does not care about daylight savings, time zones, or the fact that I was only three bites into dessert in my dream. It does not observe holidays. It does not believe in federal breaks. If the post office is closed, this thing is still open, standing at the counter, ringing the little bell, demanding service.

Gina, meanwhile, sleeps like she has diplomatic immunity from consciousness. I could set off a car alarm, drop a frying pan, or announce the house is on fire, and all I get is a sleepy, George, close the door. A marching band could parade through our bedroom playing Sousa at full volume, complete with a tuba solo, and she would just ask for five more minutes. I am convinced that if a meteor landed in our backyard she would wake up just long enough to ask if the newspaper got wet.

The Bladder Alarm Does Not Believe In Snooze Buttons

I have tried negotiating. I have begged for ten more minutes, offered a later appointment, even tried not drinking water after six p.m., which works about as well as asking a toddler to patiently wait for ice cream. I tried reasoning with it like a man discussing terms with a union boss. I offered overtime pay in the form of extra trips to the bathroom on weekends. It laughed in my face, metaphorically, because it does not have a face, which honestly makes it harder to argue with.

By the time I finish shuffling down the hallway at five in the morning, bouncing off walls like a pinball that forgot its glasses, I have already gotten more cardio than most of my neighbors get in a week. I should put that on a resume somewhere, right under excellent balance under pressure and fluent in Morse code, which is what my toe taps out every time I stub it on the dresser.

What My Bladder Alarm Has Taught Me About Life

Here is the thing nobody tells you about getting older. It teaches you patience, humility, and the exact location of every creaky floorboard in your house. I now know my hallway better than most pilots know their cockpits. I could walk it blindfolded, which is convenient, because at five in the morning I basically am.

I have started to wonder if my internal plumbing and my knees are working together on this operation. One wakes me up, the other makes sure I cannot get there quickly, and together they file a scathing performance review written entirely in discomfort. It is like employing two staff members who never take a day off, never ask for a raise, and never once say thank you for the years of service.

Once I am up, there is no going back to sleep, not for me. I wander to the kitchen, pour coffee I definitely do not need, and sit in the dark like a raccoon who pays property tax. By the time the sun actually rises, I have already had breakfast, watched the news twice, reorganized the spice rack out of boredom, and contemplated whether retirement really exists or if it is just a longer version of being awake at five.

I have even started greeting the garbage truck by name. We have a rapport now. He shows up at five fifteen sharp, same as my internal rooster, and together we watch the sun come up like two old men who both got stood up by sleep. Some mornings I half expect him to offer me a cup of coffee through the window.

So if you ever wonder why I am up before the birds, before the sun, before even that garbage truck that always seems to be in a hurry, you can thank my bladder alarm. It never sleeps in, never calls off work, and never once has it said, just five more minutes, George. At my age, it is the most reliable relationship I have got, and frankly, the only one that shows up on time without being asked twice.

Your Questions, Answered

What exactly is a bladder alarm?

It is nature’s own wake-up call, folks, no batteries, no snooze button, just pure 5 a.m. urgency that never once apologizes.

Can you turn off a bladder alarm?

I have tried bargaining with it, ignoring it, even pretending to be asleep, but it always wins the argument.

Does coffee make the bladder alarm worse?

Coffee does not make it worse, it just moves the appointment up and adds a second showing before lunch.

About Brad (Founder, Chaos Coordinator, CEO-ish) Hi, I’m Brad—the guy behind Choice1-3D who thought, “What if cartoons, music, and life lessons all argued in the same room?” I create Pixar-style 3D animation, comedy shorts, and original music that poke fun at real life, make you laugh, and occasionally sneak in something meaningful before the raccoons knock it over. While Henry edits everything to perfection, Gina ignores the budget, and the raccoons eat literally everything, I keep the lights on, the ideas flowing, and the stories coming. My desk is mostly notes, coffee, and bills—but somehow it all turns into fun. Choice1-3D exists because life is loud, weird, and funny… and sometimes the best way to understand it is through a cartoon raccoon and a good laugh. Welcome to the madness. 😄
