MC Achy

Couch startup sequence talk comes natural to me these days because getting up off my own sofa at fifty-four has turned into a whole production, complete with sound effects, dramatic pauses, and a closing statement where I immediately think about sitting back down for a minute, maybe forever.

Couch Startup Sequence
At 54, getting off the couch isn’t a groan anymore, it’s a whole startup sequence that ends with him needing a nap before he’s even fully stood up.

Let me tell you about the couch startup sequence, because at fifty-four years old it is the most important system in my whole house. Forget the Wi-Fi password, forget the thermostat, the real technology in my living room is me trying to stand up off that sofa without waking the neighbors or pulling something I still need for next week.

The Couch Startup Sequence Nobody Warned Me About

Nobody sits you down in your twenties and says ‘one day getting vertical will require a system check.’ I used to just stand up. Now there’s a whole couch startup sequence involving my knees, my lower back, and a prayer I didn’t even know I remembered from Sunday school. My grandmama used to pop up out of her chair like she was late for the Rapture. I pop up like dial-up internet trying to connect in 1997.

My grandson watched me do it the other day and said, ‘Pop-Pop, are you okay?’ I said, ‘Son, I am fully operational, I just need thirty seconds to load.’ He thought I was joking. I was not joking. That boy has never heard a computer tower whir like my right hip does when I’m reaching for the remote that fell on the floor like it’s hiding from me on purpose.

Why My Body Runs Its Own Couch Startup Sequence Every Night

Back in my rap days, I used to pop out of bed ready to go, ready to hit the studio, ready to do whatever twenty-two-year-olds do that I can’t remember anymore. Now my body runs a full couch startup sequence before it lets me do anything, including blink properly. There’s a whirring. There’s a clicking. There’s a moment I genuinely believe I’m booting up an old Windows computer about to tell me it needs an update before it can even open.

And the worst part? Once I finally get vertical, once the whole system has loaded, once I’m standing there proud like I just climbed a mountain, my body looks at me and says, ‘Great job. Now you need a nap.’ I didn’t even do anything yet! I stood up! That used to be free! Now standing up costs me energy like I just moved furniture for my cousin who ‘just needs help for a minute,’ which in family language means three hours and no pizza.

The Couch Startup Sequence Is Why I Respect My Grandparents More Now

I used to think my granddaddy was being dramatic when he groaned getting out of his recliner. I thought, man, you just sat down two hours ago, why all that noise? Now I understand. He wasn’t being dramatic. He was running his own couch startup sequence, and he did it with dignity, a cup of coffee, and zero apologies. I owe that man an apology I can never deliver, because now I sound exactly like him, clicks and all.

At the barbershop we don’t even talk about getting older anymore, we just compare startup times. One fella said his process takes four seconds flat. Another brother said his couch has a dent shaped exactly like him because he’s been loading from that same spot since 2019. I told them both, respect the process, because one day y’all gonna be standing up slower than government paperwork and you’ll wish you appreciated these fast days.

These days my cookout stories come with sound effects too. I tell a story about hauling a cooler full of ice and before I even get to the punchline I got a whole heavy sigh built in like closing credits. My family just waits for it now. They don’t even ask am I okay, they just say ‘there he goes, buffering.’ I say I’m not buffering, I’m pacing myself, there’s a difference, but the punchline’s coming, just give me a second to catch up with my own knees.

So yes, at fifty-four, I make sounds getting off the couch that I did not sign up for. Not a groan, a whole production, complete with sound effects, a dramatic pause, and a closing statement where I immediately consider sitting back down. But I’ll tell you this, I earned every click and whir. I built a life, I raised some kids, I told some jokes, and if my body wants to play a little startup music before I stand up, so be it. Just don’t rush me. The system is loading.

About Brad (Founder, Chaos Coordinator, CEO-ish) Hi, I’m Brad—the guy behind Choice1-3D who thought, “What if cartoons, music, and life lessons all argued in the same room?” I create Pixar-style 3D animation, comedy shorts, and original music that poke fun at real life, make you laugh, and occasionally sneak in something meaningful before the raccoons knock it over. While Henry edits everything to perfection, Gina ignores the budget, and the raccoons eat literally everything, I keep the lights on, the ideas flowing, and the stories coming. My desk is mostly notes, coffee, and bills—but somehow it all turns into fun. Choice1-3D exists because life is loud, weird, and funny… and sometimes the best way to understand it is through a cartoon raccoon and a good laugh. Welcome to the madness. 😄
