Thermostat Wars

George and his wife split the difference on the thermostat every night, which means they end up both cold and furious instead of just one of them.

Folks, I’ve been married a long time, and I want you to know something the wedding officiant never mentions during the ceremony: somewhere between ‘I do’ and the honeymoon suite, you sign up for a lifetime of thermostat wars, and there is no prenup that protects you from that. Nobody tells you this. They talk about in-laws, they talk about finances, they never mention that one day you’ll be standing in a hallway at 2 AM in a winter coat, indoors, arguing about numbers on a wall like you’re defusing a bomb.

Welcome to the Thermostat Wars Hall of Fame

My wife wants our house set somewhere between ‘igloo’ and ‘meat locker.’ I want it set somewhere between ‘Sahara’ and ‘the surface of the sun.’ There is no meeting point. And yet every night, like fools, we try to find one. We compromise. We split the difference. And that, my friends, is how the thermostat wars produce their one guaranteed outcome: both of us cold, both of us furious, both of us wrapped in blankets like we’re waiting to be rescued from a shipwreck, glaring at each other over a device the size of a deck of cards that somehow controls our entire marriage.

I’ve started to suspect the thermostat isn’t a climate control device at all. It’s a referee. It doesn’t work for us. It works against us. Every time I walk by, I nudge it up a degree, feeling like a secret agent. Ten minutes later it’s mysteriously back down two degrees, like the house itself is taking her side. I don’t even think she’s touching it anymore. I think the thermostat has developed loyalty.

Diplomatic Treaties Won’t Stop the Thermostat Wars

I’ve tried everything a reasonable man tries. I proposed zones. She said the house isn’t the United Nations. I proposed a fan for me and an extra blanket for her. She said a fan blowing directly on a grown man snoring is not romance, it’s a wind tunnel. I even tried the classic move — waiting until she fell asleep to adjust the temperature — but my wife sleeps like a smoke detector. One click of that dial and she’s sitting straight up going ‘did you touch it,’ and I’m lying there like a criminal who just tripped a silent alarm. There is no sneaking through the thermostat wars. There is only getting caught.

We even brought in outside consultants — our kids. Our daughter said 68. Our son said 74. So now instead of a two-front war, I’m fighting a four-front war, and somehow I’m still the one sleeping in a parka. I told my wife maybe we should just get two separate houses, side by side, connected by a heated tunnel just for arguing purposes. She said that’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever suggested and also absolutely not.

My Doctor Says the Thermostat Wars Are Bad for My Blood Pressure

I went in for a checkup and the doctor asked if I’d been under stress. I said, ‘Doc, I live in a house where the temperature changes more often than the weather forecast.’ He said my blood pressure was up. I said that’s because I sleep in socks, a hoodie, and a look of quiet betrayal. He told me to relax at home. I told him relaxing at home requires wearing three layers and negotiating like I’m at a hostage situation, except the hostage is my toes.

Here’s the thing nobody warns you about the thermostat wars — they never end in victory. There’s no surrender. There’s no trophy. There’s just two exhausted people, standing in a slightly-too-cold, slightly-too-hot living room, shivering, sweating somehow at the same time, both convinced they’re the reasonable one. My wife says I run hot. I say she runs cold. Truth is, after thirty years, we just run each other ragged, one degree at a time, and honestly? I wouldn’t trade it. Except I would love, just once, to feel my feet before noon.

About Brad (Founder, Chaos Coordinator, CEO-ish) Hi, I’m Brad—the guy behind Choice1-3D who thought, “What if cartoons, music, and life lessons all argued in the same room?” I create Pixar-style 3D animation, comedy shorts, and original music that poke fun at real life, make you laugh, and occasionally sneak in something meaningful before the raccoons knock it over. While Henry edits everything to perfection, Gina ignores the budget, and the raccoons eat literally everything, I keep the lights on, the ideas flowing, and the stories coming. My desk is mostly notes, coffee, and bills—but somehow it all turns into fun. Choice1-3D exists because life is loud, weird, and funny… and sometimes the best way to understand it is through a cartoon raccoon and a good laugh. Welcome to the madness. 😄
