Love, One, and God’s Name

In Hebrew, the words for love and one each carry the value thirteen, and together they add up to twenty-six — the very number of God’s holy name.

I’ve always found it fascinating that Hebrew never developed a separate set of numeral symbols the way we did with our 1, 2, 3. Instead, every single letter of the alef-bet does double duty — it’s a sound, and it’s a number. That means every word in the Hebrew Bible, whether it’s a name, a verb, or a tiny little conjunction, is quietly carrying a numeric value underneath the surface. Once you start noticing that, you can’t stop seeing it, and some of the patterns that turn up are enough to make a grown man sit back in his chair and just stare at the page for a while.

Why Hebrew Gematria Turns Words Into Windows

The practice of adding up those letter-values is what’s called Hebrew Gematria, and it’s been used by Jewish scholars for a very long time — not as a magic trick, but as a way of paying closer attention to a text that was written with tremendous care. When two words carry the exact same numeric value, ancient readers took that as an invitation to sit with them side by side and ask what they might be teaching each other. That’s exactly what happens with the Hebrew words for love and for one.

The Weight of Love in Hebrew Gematria

The Hebrew word for love, ahava, is spelled with four letters — aleph, hey, bet, and hey again. Add up their values — one, five, two, and five — and you land on thirteen. Now take the word echad, meaning one or unity, spelled aleph, chet, dalet. That comes out to one, eight, and four — thirteen again. Two completely different concepts, love and oneness, arriving at the exact same number. I don’t think that’s an accident of the alphabet. I think it’s a fingerprint left on purpose.

Where Hebrew Gematria Points Straight to the Name

Here’s where it gets even more wonderful. Add those two thirteens together and you get twenty-six. That happens to be the exact numeric value of the four-letter name of God, YHWH — yud, hey, vav, hey — ten, five, six, five, adding up to twenty-six. So love plus oneness equals the divine name itself, worked out in plain arithmetic, sitting right there in the letters God’s people have been reading for thousands of years. It’s the kind of thing Hebrew Gematria was made to surface — not proof stacked on proof, but an invitation to wonder.

And it doesn’t stop there. Open up Psalm 136 sometime and count the verses — twenty-six of them, every single one ending with the same refrain, ‘His steadfast love endures forever.’ Twenty-six verses, twenty-six declarations of love, matching the twenty-six of the holy name. Or think about the Shema in Deuteronomy 6:4 — ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one’ — echad, that same word carrying its own thirteen, planted right in the most central confession of faith in the whole Hebrew Bible. Jewish tradition even speaks of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy in Exodus 34, God’s own self-description built on that very number.

I keep coming back to this because it isn’t just clever math — it’s a picture. Love by itself is thirteen. Oneness by itself is thirteen. But put them together, let love and unity actually meet each other, and you get the fullness of the name. That’s not something I can fully explain, but I don’t think I’m meant to explain it so much as sit with it, the way you’d sit with a good sunset. Until we talk again, keep your Bible open and your eyes wide — there’s more hiding in these pages than we ever imagined.

About Brad (Founder, Chaos Coordinator, CEO-ish) Hi, I’m Brad—the guy behind Choice1-3D who thought, “What if cartoons, music, and life lessons all argued in the same room?” I create Pixar-style 3D animation, comedy shorts, and original music that poke fun at real life, make you laugh, and occasionally sneak in something meaningful before the raccoons knock it over. While Henry edits everything to perfection, Gina ignores the budget, and the raccoons eat literally everything, I keep the lights on, the ideas flowing, and the stories coming. My desk is mostly notes, coffee, and bills—but somehow it all turns into fun. Choice1-3D exists because life is loud, weird, and funny… and sometimes the best way to understand it is through a cartoon raccoon and a good laugh. Welcome to the madness. 😄
